During the [Triwizard Tournament](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/triwizard-tournament) at [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts), Durmstrang was one of the competing schools, with [Quidditch](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/quidditch) ace [Viktor Krum](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/viktor-krum) serving as their champion. However, Durmstrang has also been known for its witches and wizards with interests in the darker side of magic, with [Igor Karkaroff](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/igor-karkaroff), an ex-Death Eater, instilling fear into the school during his tenure there, while former student [Gellert Grindelwald](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/gellert-grindelwald) went on to be one of the most terrifying wizards of his generation.

Beauxbatons Academy of Magic was a wizarding school located in the Pyrenees mountains, with French, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Luxembourgian and Belgian students being some of the most common nationalities who studied there. The school was set in a beautiful chateau surrounded by formal landscaped gardens. Beauxbatons was one of the three schools that traditionally took part in the [Triwizard Tournament](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/triwizard-tournament) and travelled to the host school in enormous enchanted carriages, each pulled by a dozen winged horses. At the time, [Madame Maxime](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/olympe-maxime) was the headmistress of the school, with [Fleur Delacour](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fleur-delacour) being chosen as the school's Champion. Fleur was keen to tell people how much better her school was over Hogwarts, boasting about ice sculptures that did not melt, and wood nymphs that would serenade the students.

The Triwizard tournament was a 700 year old competition established between three schools; [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, [Durmstrang Institute](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/durmstrang-institute) and and [Beauxbatons Academy](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/beauxbatons-academy) of Magic. One champion from each school was selected to compete in three magical tasks, with their name magically being selected from the [Goblet of Fire](/fact-file/objects/the-goblet-of-fire). The winner of the competition claimed [the Triwizard Cup](/fact-file/objects/the-triwizard-cup) along with a monetary prize. After a hiatus of a number of years, due to a high fatality rate, the Triwizard Tournament returned to Hogwarts during Harry's fourth year at school.

With the head of a human on the body of a lion, the sphinx is a highly intelligent creature that specialises in puzzles and riddles and as a result are often use by witches and wizards as guards for secret hideaways and valuable objects. They are classed as ‘beasts’ despite their intelligence due to their potentially dangerous natures. The Triwizard Cup was the grand prize for winning the [Triwizard Tournament](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/triwizard-tournament), alongside a thousand galleons, and, of course, securing eternal glory for the school the Champion represented. During the tournament hosted at Hogwarts, the cup was placed in the centre of a complicated maze, with the Champions tasked with overcoming several magical obstacles (such as solving a riddle from a [Sphinx](/fact-file/creatures/sphinx)) to reach the trophy.

Portkey Fact File Body Text

A magical object enchanted to take anyone touching it from one location to another, a Portkey was usually an inconspicuous item unlikely to draw the attention of a [Muggle](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles). Travelling by Portkey was set to be quite uncomfortable and felt like being hooked just behind the naval and being dragged to the new location. Useful for transporting large numbers of people, for instance to the [Quidditch](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/quidditch) World Cup, or for wizards and witches who were unable to Apparate, Portkeys were fast, easy and if not comfortable - mostly safe.

Non-magical people could use Portkeys, as [Jacob Kowalski](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/jacob-kowalski) found out when Newt Scamander introduced him to one.

Barty Crouch Jr. first became a follower of Lord Voldemort in his teenage years and was sent to [Azkaban](/fact-file/locations/azkaban) for his involvement in the capture and torture of Frank and Alice Longbottom. However, he was able to escape, the first to do so in almost 300 years, and travelled to [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) in order to help his master return to power via a twisted scheme. Harry Potter was prophesied to be the downfall of [Lord Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and therefore singled out at birth as the Dark Lord's rival. He was known in the wizarding world as 'The Boy Who Lived' after becoming the only known survivor of [the Killing Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-killing-curse), which was attempted by Voldemort when Harry was just a baby, after both his parents were murdered. The first Hogwarts competitor to be chosen by the [Goblet of Fire](/fact-file/objects/the-goblet-of-fire) for the [Triwizard Tournament](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/triwizard-tournament), Cedric Diggory was quickly joined by surprise fourth champion [Harry Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter). Having already played Seeker opposite Harry in the previous year, Cedric was graceful in being pitted against the famous Potter and the pair quickly came to realise that they could join forces and benefit from sharing knowledge and ideas. The handsome Hufflepuff Quidditch Captain was by far and away the Hogwarts favourite, not only as a competitor for the trophy but also as a pin-up. Good hearted as he was heroic however, Cedric was devoted to his girlfriend, Ravenclaw, [Cho Chang](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/cho-chang).
