Many Weasley family members were there right from the beginning of the story – Ron was one of Harry’s best friends. Fred and George made us belly laugh pretty much from the moment we saw them. Mrs Weasley, after only meeting Harry once, sent him homemade Christmas presents!  And Percy... well he showed us just how important the role of a Prefect was at Hogwarts. It’s safe to say that in *Philosopher’s Stone* the Weasleys made their mark as individuals. Yet, it wasn’t until Chamber of Secrets that we saw them all together as a family unit – and what a family. Warm and welcoming, they swiftly became firm favourites of ours. 

Now we have to admit that it was difficult to pinpoint just one excellent Weasley family moment – there have been many. From Mrs Weasley presenting Harry with her brother’s watch when he came of age to spending a wizarding Christmas at The Burrow to Bill and Fleur’s wedding day (without the disruption at the end), we were hard-pressed to pick just one chapter. Yet, we kept circling back to the moment in *Chamber of Secrets* when Harry went to their house for the very first time and we think you’ll understand why...

‘Touchdown!’ said Fred as, with a slight bump, they hit the ground. They had landed next to a tumbledown garage in a small yard and Harry looked out for the first time at Ron’s house.

It looked as though it had once been a large stone pigsty, but extra rooms had been added here and there until it was several storeys high and so crooked it looked as though it was held up by magic (which, Harry reminded himself, it probably was). Four or five chimneys were perched on top of the red roof. A lop-sided sign stuck in the ground near the entrance read ‘The Burrow’. Round the front door lay a jumble of wellington boots and a very rusty cauldron. Several fat brown chickens were pecking their way around the yard.

‘It’s not much,’ said Ron.

‘It’s brilliant,’ said Harry happily, thinking of Privet Drive.

After an incident with a house-elf and Aunt Petunia’s pudding of sugared violets, things had become pretty much unbearable for Harry at Privet Drive. Confined to his room and fed through a cat-flap installed in his bedroom door, he felt like a prisoner. When Ron, Fred, George and a flying Ford Anglia prized the bars off his bedroom window and came to his rescue we knew things could only get better for him… and they certainly did.

After a flight back to the village Ottery St Catchpole, Harry saw The Burrow for the very first time and it couldn’t have been more different than that of the too-clean, characterless and suffocating Privet Drive. Ramshackle and clearly held together by magic, it was obviously a loving family home – something that Harry desperately needed. 

Not only did we see some familiar faces like Mrs Weasley and Ginny again, but we also met Mr Weasley – another wizard who would become a father figure to Harry. But most importantly, we got to witness the Weasley family in their element. Their in-jokes, their teasing (Mrs Weasley’s crush on Gilderoy Lockhart), their bickering (well if you are going to fly a car illegally...), it was exactly the opposite of Harry’s experience growing up. 

It was the very first time that Harry was also able to get stuck into life in a wizarding family. And after a hearty breakfast, he got to partake in wizarding chores like de-gnoming the garden. He saw what it was like to live in a house where magic was the norm. In short, Harry got to experience an entirely different type of homelife.

It seemed to go on for hours. Mrs Weasley had shouted herself hoarse before she turned on Harry, who backed away. ‘I’m very pleased to see you, Harry, dear,’ she said, ‘Come in and have some breakfast.’

What really made us fall in love with the Weasley family, was the welcome Harry received. The Dursleys never made Harry feel like he was wanted or that he belonged. He was the permanent outsider – barely tolerated, ignored where possible and treated terribly when acknowledged. In this chapter, despite the fact she was furious with her sons, Mrs Weasley made him feel immediately welcome. It was like she was expecting him, and the offer of breakfast showed that there was always room for him at their table. This was something Harry wasn’t used to, and her acceptance showed him how he should be treated by a loving family. 

This also marked the start of Harry’s long and happy relationship with the family as a whole. Yes, Ron had been his best friend but soon every member of the family became, well, family. For all intents and purposes, he was a Weasley. He was welcome during the holidays. He played Quidditch in their orchard. The family fought for him and protected him. Arthur Weasley took him to his Ministry hearing. Molly and Bill came to support him as family before the third task of the Triwizard tournament. He fell in love and started a family with Ginny – we could go on and on. And you could say it all began here in *Chamber of Secrets* when he was officially welcomed into the family home.

We had to finish on Harry’s comment at the end of the chapter – it sums everything up really. Before this, the only place that Harry had felt truly happy was Hogwarts. Now Harry had another place where he could feel safe and loved and it was all thanks to the Weasleys.

As the house of those who are ‘brave at heart’ – including, of course, Harry Potter: The Chosen One, aka The Boy Who Lived and all that – you could do a lot worse than fall in love with a Gryffindor. But in case you need persuading, here are a few other reasons why Gryffindors are perfect boy/girlfriend material…

## They have a certain risky glamour

It’s probably all that nerve and daring they like to throw around, but many Gryffindors possess an almost undefinable sparkle that makes for a great partner. Sure, sometimes they exhibit a bravery that borders on recklessness, but with a Gryffindor you’d be having way too much fun to worry about breaking rules. Sirius and James were, perhaps, the original Gryffindor bad boys; curse-breaker Bill Weasley was glamorous enough to attract the attention of Fleur Delacour; and Harry’s celebrity status undoubtedly gave him a certain cachet, inspiring such beautiful poetry as:

But Gryffindor’s glamour isn’t the sole preserve of male students with a disregard for danger – truly, no Gryffindor is truly immune to a spot of risk-taking. Who can forget Ginny’s statement:

Even model student Hermione had a Gryffindor-flavoured attitude to rules – she might not have cared for slathering her hair in Sleekeazy’s Hair Potion every day but, from brewing Polyjuice Potion in her second year to creating the D.A. right under Umbridge’s nose, she was a risk-taker of the highest degree. Also witness her almost single-handed protection of herself, Ron and Harry during their Horcrux hunt at no small personal risk: honestly, where would anyone have been without Hermione?

They don’t play it safe, Gryffindors, but their exploits do give them a glamorous golden glow. Who knows, go out with a Gryffindor and perhaps that glow will reflect on you…

## You could be a calming influence 

The trouble with all this risky danger is that sometimes it goes to a Gryffindor’s head – especially, it has to be said, amongst the male students. Hermione called Harry out on his *‘saving-people* thing’, James and Sirius could be ‘arrogant little berks’, Ron was reckless enough to cast a slug-eating spell on Draco Malfoy [with a malfunctioning wand.](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/wand-woods)

But you could change all that. Calm down your hot-headed Gryffindor with some disarming Luna Lovegood-esque Ravenclaw wisdom, or urge them towards Hufflepuff-inspired fairness. Make a Gryffindor pause for thought and they could be yours for life – at least, that’s what we like to think with regards to Hufflepuff Nymphadora Tonks and Gryffindor Remus Lupin, given Lupin’s initial refusal to listen either to his own feelings or to the reasonable protestations of those who urged him to accept Tonks’s love for him, despite his being a werewolf. Tonks made Lupin realise he didn’t need to continue his self-imposed loneliness, and if that’s not an example of Hufflepuff patience countering Gryffindor determination, then we don’t know what is.

## A true Gryffindor will defend you to the end

Gryffindors are chivalrous; the Sorting Hat says so. That means they’re pretty much duty-bound to look out for you (although we’re not counting either Harry’s behaviour towards Cho or Ron’s to Lavender in this scenario: teenage romances are tricky, even for Gryffindors). 

Still, when the chips are down and you’re facing a Voldemort who wants you dead, it is probably going to be a Gryffindor who saves you – whether sacrificing their own life for the love of yours, as Lily did for Harry, or defying the Dark Lord with such confidence that Godric Gryffindor himself sends you his sword, as Neville did in the Battle of Hogwarts.

## They’re inspirational

Just look at the list of famous Gryffindors: Dumbledore, Sirius, Lupin, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Neville, all three Potters. They had their faults, of course, but as ex-students go it’s an intimidatingly impressive list. Date a Gryffindor and you, too, might find yourself bound for greatness – well, you couldn’t go out with someone known for bravery and not become a little bit braver yourself.

## You’d have a whale of a time

Going out with a Gryffindor would make life pretty unpredictable, but it would also be a lot of fun. From Fred and George’s Wizard Wheezes to Lee Jordan’s Quidditch commentary and the Marauders’ hilariously inappropriate comments to Snape via the medium of magical map, there’d be ample opportunity for witty repartee and jokes. Plus, think of the stories a Gryffindor would have: all those daring tales just waiting to be revisited over a drink in the Three Broomsticks.

Are you somebody that is able to find light and laughter in any situation? Are you able to focus on the here and now rather than worrying about what may or may not happen in the future? Then Ron Weasley is the friend for you. 

Ron is a character that often brings welcome relief. His colourful language (Merlin’s most baggy Y-fronts anyone?) and witty one-liners could make anyone smile. Even after the Battle of Hogwarts, in which he lost Fred, he still managed to find a light moment. Who can forget his droll response to Peeve’s little ditty?

Hermione Granger is certainly intelligent, but she doesn’t take it for granted and never rests on her laurels. She always worked hard to be the very best that she could be. Her drive was unapparelled – who else could have pretty much memorised all of their textbooks before they even started at Hogwarts? 

She also encouraged those around her to do their best too (even if a certain couple of wizards often complained about it). From drawing up revision timetables, to checking Harry and Ron’s homework, there is no doubt that she helped them to become better wizards. With her ability and determination, it’s really no surprise that she eventually ended up as Minister for Magic.

So, if you’re someone who doesn’t settle for mediocrity and is always striving to learn and do more, then Hermione would be your best friend. We reckon we would find the pair of you holed up in the library, discussing ideas and challenging each other to always be at the top of your game.

Harry Potter is someone who has faced more than his fair share of obstacles and tragedy. The death of his parents, being brought up by the Dursleys, bearing the weight of being the chosen one and fighting Voldemort are just some of the things he has had to handle. All of that is enough to make anyone want to run away and hide. But not Harry. Every time he has been knocked down, he has got back up and fought even harder – and helped to make the wizarding world a better place. 

If you are someone who is determined to keep moving forward when things are tough, then we think Harry would be a fantastic friend for you. It takes a lot of strength to face hard situations or the unknown, but we can just imagine the two of you supporting and encouraging each other to be able to face anything that is thrown at you – and we’re sure you’d do it brilliantly.
