Azkaban Fact File Body Text

The island prison in the middle of the North Sea, Azkaban was a place of confinement for the most dangerous wizards and witches. Guarded by [Dementors](/fact-file/creatures/dementor), life at Azkaban was notoriously brutal with many of its inhabitants losing their minds over the course of their sentence. Many dark witches and wizards passed through Azkaban's gates, including [Bellatrix](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/bellatrix-lestrange) and Rodolphus Lestrange, but as we learnt, it was possible to break out.

Within [the Ministry of Magic](/fact-file/locations/the-ministry-of-magic), the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures created a system of rules to determine whether a magical creature was a "beast or being" and also gave each creature a classification in terms of how dangerous it was - or not! The rating was measured with "X" being the least dangerous and "XXXXX" being the most dangerous. So, a Flobberworm, for example, would be rated X, while something far more scary, such as a [Chinese Fireball](/fact-file/creatures/chinese-fireball) dragon, would be XXXXX.

Barty Crouch Jr. first became a follower of Lord Voldemort in his teenage years and was sent to [Azkaban](/fact-file/locations/azkaban) for his involvement in the capture and torture of Frank and Alice Longbottom. However, he was able to escape, the first to do so in almost 300 years, and travelled to [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) in order to help his master return to power via a twisted scheme. Barty's actions were particularly notable considering his father, Barty Crouch Sr., was a respected wizard at the [Ministry of Magic.](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/ministry-of-magic-classifications)

Dark Arts Fact File Body Text

Dark Arts referred to any magic that was mainly used to control, harm or kill its target. Brewing harmful [potions](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/potions), using hexes and curses, and breeding dark creatures could be illegal, not only because of the terrible consequences of using it but also for the corrupting nature of the practice which affected the practitioner themselves. The use of the Dark Arts was also commonly linked with affiliation with wizarding supremacy and support of Dark wizards, Lord Voldemort and Gellart Grindelwald. Although it was impossible to entirely defeat the Dark Arts young wizards were taught how to recognise it and defend themselves against Dark magic.

Duelling Fact File Body Text

Duelling was a type of formal combat between two or more witches or wizards during which time only magical acts could be used as a form of offence or attack. Before a duel started the opponents would bow to show their mutual respect before waiting for a count of three to start. Although some duels ended in death, students were also able to practice the art of duelling at [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) and it also existed as a competitive sport with rigorous rules about the curses, hexes and [charms](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/charms) allowed to be used.

Quidditch Fact File Body Text

Quidditch was a wizarding sport played on [broomstick](/fact-file/objects/broomstick)s. The teams consisted of seven players competing to score the higher number of points, either by scoring goals by throwing a Quaffle through a hoop or by catching the [Golden Snitch](/fact-file/objects/golden-snitch) - at which point the game ended. Although the Snitch was worth 150 points, a game could be won if enough goals were scored before it was caught. Chasers and Seekers also had to avoid being hit by Bludgers, hard iron balls that were directed across the pitch by Beaters. Games were usually played by mixed teams, although the Holyhead Harpies were an all-female professional team.

A core class taught at [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Potions was the study of magical ingredients and brewing potions, taught in the [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) dungeons. Students would study potions such as the [Shrinking Solution](/fact-file/plants-and-potions/shrinking-solution), [Amortentia](/fact-file/plants-and-potions/amortentia) and [the Draught of Peace](/fact-file/plants-and-potions/the-draught-of-peace). Whilst [Harry Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) was at [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts), he was largely taught by [Severus Snape](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/severus-snape), followed by [Horace Slughorn](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/horace-slughorn). Harry’s relationship with Snape was a difficult one and it meant that as a student he never particularly enjoyed Potions lessons very much. Alas, for students like Harry who wanted to become an [Auror](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/auror), Potions was an integral lesson to take forwards to N.E.W.T level.
